about: This is a funky little independent boutique that features exclusive clothing for women. The styles, made by the store's namesake Dema Grim, are youthful and modern and come in bright, vibrant fabrics with different textures. The garments teeter around $100 and are all well worth the price considering that they are small production, original, and quality designs. To go with the wild clothing, the decor of the store is retro and the music playing is punk. Even if you do not buy anything, this store is worth a visit.

about: Vintage clothing from the 1920s to the 1980s can be unearthed on the racks of this narrow little store on a hip block in the Mission. Some of the dramatic women's wear -- go-go boots, pillbox hats, faux Chanel suits -- is suitable for streetwear or dress-up, depending on your style, while the menswear tends more toward fashionably retro jackets and button-up shirts from the classic to the gaudy.

about:This Haight Street store is a vintage warehouse, where the locals go to sell old clothes for some extra cash. But the staff here will not take just anything. They always know what the store needs more of, so do not expect them to do handsprings over just any pair of Brady Bunch bellbottoms. Because they are so selective, this used clothes icon has tons of cool garb that go with the trends while staying true to a retro vibe.

about: Although you might guess the clothes at HRM Boutique were created by a single, modernist mind, two designers share this minimalist Valencia Street space. Bob Scales's no-nonsense men's clothes and Susan Hengst's unique designs for women seem to celebrate the quality of the fabric.
Surprisingly, they fit in unobtrusively among the vintage shops while providing more of a selection for jaded thrift store junkies and sometimes at a cost not outrageously higher than over-priced vintage wear.
